Mount Sinai sunrise hike planner

Night ascent routes, gear for sub-zero summit wind, and village departure windows.

Mount Sinai trail at dawn with hikers ascending granite steps

Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa) rises 2,285 metres above St Catherine village. Pilgrims and hikers ascend in darkness to reach the summit before dawn. This guide is for fit adults; children under ten should consider shorter Nabq walks instead.

Route choice

The camel path zigzags gently from St Catherine trailhead; Bedouin operators offer camels for the lower section around EGP 200–300 negotiated. The Steps of Repentance (3,750 steps) are shorter in distance but brutal on knees. Many hikers ascend via camel path and descend the steps with headlamps still on.

Timeline example (February)

01:30 leave village guesthouse; 02:00 pass checkpoint; 04:45 reach summit; 05:15 astronomical dawn; 07:30 back at monastery perimeter for breakfast. Adjust 20 minutes earlier in June heat waves.

Links to monastery stay

Coordinate with St Catherine monastery visit rules—grounds may open after your descent. Review Bedouin culture tips for tea hut pricing on trail.

Heat and checkpoint delays are covered in our Sinai safety guide. Desk fees for merged timing appear on pricing page.

Seasonal differences

Winter demands down jackets at summit; summer nights are milder but dehydration risk rises. Wind chill charts are included in Monastery Runner PDFs.

Guide hiring

Bedouin guides are mandatory in some convoy periods. Fees are negotiated at trailhead; carry EGP 200–400 extra per person.

Environmental respect

Pack out all trash. Toilet facilities are basic. Do not etch rocks—fines and cultural offense both apply.

Two paths: Camel route versus Steps of Repentance

Most groups ascend via the camel path—a wide gravel track switchbacking from St Catherine village—and descend the 3,750 Steps of Repentance if knees allow. The steps are steep basalt blocks with uneven heights; trekking poles help. Camel hire costs about EGP 400–600 one way; negotiate before starting and tip separately.

Sunrise target means leaving guesthouse around 01:30–02:00 depending on season. Summit temperature can be 2°C with wind; pack gloves and beanie even when Sharm was 30°C the previous afternoon.

What to pack

Headlamp with spare batteries, two litres water minimum, electrolyte sachets, high-energy snacks, warm layer, rain shell (rare but possible), photocopy passport, small cash for tea at summit stalls. Toilet paper and hand sanitiser—facilities are basic.

Combining with monastery visit

After descent, monastery opens to tourists in morning windows separate from liturgy. Burning Bush chapel access is timed; photography rules are strict. Read our monastery guide before assuming same-day interior tours fit your fatigue level.

Altitude and fitness expectations

Summit elevation reaches 2,285 metres. Healthy adults acclimatise within hours but cardiac conditions warrant doctor clearance. Pace with the slowest group member; guides may split parties. Oxygen is rarely available on trail—carry personal medication.

Guide licensing and tips

Licensed Jebeliya guides wear badges issued by South Sinai governorate. Tip EGP 150–250 per person for sunrise guidance when service exceeds basic pacing. Guides are not medical staff—declare asthma before ascent.

Guesthouse logistics before the climb

St Catherine village guesthouses serve simple dinner around 18:00 and early breakfast before the 02:00 departure. Power cuts happen; charge headlamps and phones at dinner. Blankets may be thin—sleep in base layers. Store excess luggage at guesthouse desk rather than carrying to summit.

Summit stalls sell tea and blankets at premium prices; carry your own layer to avoid EGP 200 blanket rental. Toilet at summit is basic; use guesthouse facilities before ascent when possible.

Camel handlers expect tip separate from guide fee; agree camel price before mount to avoid summit arguments in the dark.

Download star map app before losing signal; summit orientation talks reference constellations visible pre-dawn.

Group size limits apply during peak pilgrimage weekends; book guesthouse and guide together to avoid split convoys that lose sunrise timing at the trail fork.

Pack light; every kilogram feels heavier above 2,000 metres.
